The musical prominence of Hungarians was due to the Franz Liszt Academy, where at a particular time four people by the names of Bartók, Kodály, Dohányi and Leo Weiner sat in the same composition class. Everybody knows the first three, but no one knows Leo Weiner, who became a teacher. Although he did win a composition competition against the "big three," his life was teaching chamber music. If you have ever met a Hungarian musician over the age of 30, they were all in Leo Weiner's class: Antal Dorati, Geza Anda, and others-violinists, whoever. This man is in our estimation the greatest music teacher of all time. |
